ORLANDO (by Sarah Ruhl after Virginia Woolf), at Barnard College
Orlando grew up a boy in Elizabethan England; Orlando awoke a woman during his ambassadorship in Constantinople. Skimming through history, Orlando gained the favor of the Virgin Queen, found his first love during the Great Frost, got herself a husband, and swung through the roaring 1920s. He lived a thousand lives and she a thousand deaths, all as “Orlando” and so much more. See Director's Statement.

“In this production, however, where words fail, the magic of theater steps in. Under Xia’s direction, the genre of the play became a character itself. The show never strove for realism; rather, it leaned into its inherent fantasy and whimsy. The set and costumes were also astounding and contributed to the dreamlike aura that characterized the play. – Columbia Student News Read More
